Sometimes being in the right place at the right time can create connections that are unexpected. This was the case for a police officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico who had no idea that a seemingly routine patrol around his community would change his life forever.
When Officer Ryan Holets spotted a pair of homeless people camped out behind a local store, he approached them to assess the situation. As he got closer, he discovered that the pair appeared to be a couple, and the woman was pregnant. Officer Holets seemed to have interrupted the pair as they were preparing to abuse drugs.

Although they were clearly committing a crime, Officer Holets was actually more concerned with the fate of the unborn baby the woman was carrying as he told CNN. He expressed his concern to the woman seen on his body cam video, telling her that if she continued doing drugs while she was pregnant she could harm her baby. This got a very emotional response from the homeless woman, who the officer learned was named Crystal Champ.
Crystal told the officer that she was aware of the harm she was doing to her baby and felt horrible about it. She said that she had been battling her drug addiction for years and so far, the drugs had won. Then she said something that truly touched Officer Holets’ heart – she was searching for someone to adopt her baby.
In that moment, Officer Holets felt moved to help. As the father to four children, he did not want to see a helpless child born into such a dangerous situation. Without even consulting with his wife, he asked Crystal if she would allow him to adopt the baby, and she agreed. When he was able to speak with his wife, she was in agreement that they should adopt the baby.
Crystal was very relieved that someone would give her baby a better life. When the baby was born, she had to go through a detox protocol because of her exposure to drugs. Officer Holets and his wife named the baby Hope.
