A police officer with the NYPD is being praised for quick thinking in stopping a woman from killing herself and her child. The woman, whose name is being withheld from the press, was suffering from post-partum depression when she texted her mother, Latika Thorpe, that she felt overwhelmed and had decided to kill herself and her daughter, who is six months old. The woman was staying with Thorpe in Brooklyn but actually lives in Pennsylvania. Thorpe immediately contacted the NYPD for help in locating her wayward daughter, resulting in Officers Michelle Schack and Gulrej Nandha visiting the family’s home in Canarsie.

Officer Schack realized that time was of the essence in preventing the woman from killing herself and her baby. With the aid of her fellow police officers, Officer Schack located the woman’s car crossing the Verrazano Bridge. Upon hearing this, Thorpe told the two NYPD officers that her daughter usually crossed the Verrazano Bridge to head home to Pennsylvania. Thorpe also pointed out how easy it is to buy a firearm in the state of Pennsylvania.

With Thorpe’s input, Officer Schack quickly realized the woman’s plan. She was going to return to her home in Pennsylvania, buy a gun, and then commit her heinous crime. Schack decided to contact gun shops on the route the woman was taking home and give them her description. The first shop Officer Schack contacted was Pocono Mountain Firearms in Scotrun. Michael Conforti, the store’s owner, initially thought it was a prank when Officer Schack contacted him. Despite being wary of the nature of the call, Conforti promised to keep an eye out for the mother and her child.

Speaking with the New York Post, Conforti says that mere minutes after Officer Schack contacted him, the woman pulled into his parking lot. Conforti immediately told Officer Schack that the woman and her child were in his store. The NYPD officer advised him to stall her and contact local law enforcement. Soon after, police officers from the Pocono Mountain Regional Police arrived and brought the woman and her child to a nearby hospital without incident.

Officer Schack was very happy that the woman and her child are okay and under mental health care. Thorpe and her family remain grateful to the NYPD and have particularly praised Officer Schack for her work. Thorpe believes that Officer Schack went well beyond the call of duty in how she handled the case.
