When Sherice Richardson, a registered nurse in North Carolina, saw a police cruiser on the side of the road, she slowed down because she didn't want a speeding ticket. Then she noticed bullet holes in the cruiser's windshield.

Richardson was about to pick her son up from daycare when she came across the disabled police cruiser on a country road near Beauvue, North Carolina. There was smoke pouring from the front of the car and bullet holes in the windshield.

"The car was smoking with bullet holes in it and I just couldn’t go past it," Richardson said in a facebook post.

The registered nurse ran up to the vehicle where she found Trooper Daniel Harrell bleeding from his face and neck. The trooper was conscious when he told Richardson that he'd been hit.

As other motorists pulled over to help, Richardson started performing first aid on Trooper Harrell. She found gauze in the police cruiser and told one of the bystanders how to apply pressure to Harrell's wounds.

Richardson dialed 911 and waited with Trooper Harrell until the paramedics arrived. She did her best to comfort the officer and asked God to keep him safe.

The situation was all too familiar for Richardson. She lost her brother to an act of violence, and she remembers seeing his lifeless body lying on the concrete. She didn't want another family to have to endure the pain that her family did.

In a Facebook post, Sherice Richardson alluded to the fact that she hasn't always had a positive view of law enforcement, but none of that mattered when she saw the injured officer. She believes that God put her on that highway for a reason.

Richardson also said she felt strange trying to help a police officer when the police are usually the ones doing the protecting. She told interviewers she was praying for a fast recovery for Trooper Harrell.

According to ABC 11, Trooper Daniel Harrell was released from the hospital and is recovering from home. He was shot in both the face and neck, and his doctors say he is lucky to have survived.

Trooper Harrell's family and fellow officers were with him when he left the hospital. He was riding in a wheelchair but was able to stand briefly before he was helped into a waiting vehicle. Harrell has been with the police force in Wilson County for five years. Three suspects in Trooper Harrell's shooting have been taken into custody.

It appears that Trooper Harrell pulled the suspects over in a routine traffic stop.

They opened fire after he returned to his vehicle to run their information. One of the suspects, John Jones, is being charged with attempted murder. People have opened up a GoFundMe page for those, who want to help Trooper Daniel Harrell with his medical costs.
