Too often we take life’s little pleasures for granted. These moments of peace and tranquility, like spending time with loved ones or unwinding after a long day, are so normal to us that we don’t realize how valuable they truly are.

If you found out you only had a few hours to live, what would you wish for? Carsten Hansen, 75, who found himself living out his final moments in a hospital, wished for one of these simple peaceful moments.

Hansen, 75, was suffering a ruptured aortic aneurysm and was taken to a hospital in Denmark where doctors made the uncomfortable decision to not perform a life-saving operation on Hansen because he was too weak and frail. Hansen was told that he would not survive more than a few hours due to the internal bleeding from the aneurysm.

Hansen, knowing he was at the end of his timeline, made a simple request to his nurse: he wished to enjoy his final moments with a cold glass of white wine, a cigarette, and a view of the sunset.

The nurses managed to find a bottle of white wine, and Hansen’s room luckily had a balcony facing the sun, but the cigarette posed a problem. Smoking is strictly prohibited at the hospital out of safety for the other patients

However, Hansen’s nurse Rikki Kvist understood the gravity of the situation and decided it was okay to break the rule.

The nurses wheeled Hansen onto the balcony, who sat upright facing the vibrant gradient of the setting sun. They gave him a glass of white wine, lit him a cigarette, and left him to quietly enjoy his last beautiful sunset with his family.

"It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere," Nurse Kvist said to The Telegraph. "Of course they were relatives also affected by the fact that he was going to die, and they were sad. But it was cozy and there was humor."

A photo of Hansen enjoying his final moments on the balcony was posted on the hospital’s Facebook page, which has since been shared over 5,000 times. People wrote their condolences and commented about how they would probably make the same decision if they found themselves in Hansen’s position.

After enjoying his final wish, Hansen passed away that evening.
