Angela Farnan is a primary charge nurse at the OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois. In 2019, she cared for Blaze, who was born with a congenital heart defect in the pediatric intensive care unit. She fell in love with this tiny patient and decided to adopt him.
Nurses who specialize in pediatric intensive care often form a special bond with their little patients, even considering them to be family and treating them like their own children.
This was the case with Angela Farnan, who is a primary charge nurse at the OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois. She and her patient became a real family when the biological parents of then three-year-old Blaze asked her to adopt him.

Now Farnan, 54, and her husband Rick, 58, are forever family to little Blaze, who has a rare heart defect also known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
When Blaze was just three days old, he had his first open-heart surgery. He was later out into Angela’s PICU, where he won over his caregivers. “This little guy has such personality,” Angela told PEOPLE. “I was just drawn to him.” Blaze’s biological parents lived far from the hospital and were raising their other young children and because of that, they were not able to be there at the hospital consistently. The doctors, nurses, and hospital staff became Blaze’s family.
After about seven months, Blaze no longer needed to stay in the hospital, but he required intensive care that his biological family couldn’t provide. The Farnans agreed to be temporary foster parents and agreed to look after him until the date of his second procedure.
In the hospital following the surgery, though, Blaze’s mother made an unexpected, heartfelt request. In Blaze’s best interest, she asked if the Farnans would adopt Blaze. Without hesitation, the couple – who can’t have biological children of their own – agreed. “Becoming a parent for the first time, I can’t describe the feeling,” Angela said. “It was one of the best days of our lives.”
The Farnans and Blaze are so blessed to have each other. Pass this story along to your friends and family to spread a message of love.
