Adele Hankey, from Park River, ND, has been exchanging birthday cards with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II for almost seven decades. Hankey shares her birthday with Queen Elizabeth, and they both recently celebrated their 94th birthday on April 21.

This birthday exchange all started in 1952 when Hankey decided to congratulate Queen Elizabeth on becoming reigning monarch, and to wish her a happy birthday. The best way she could do this was by sending her a card.

Ever since, she has been sent a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth annually. She also collects royal memorabilia, and is even sent photographs of the queen, from the queen herself.

According to The Dickinson Press, Hankey made the initial card with her grandmother. “I lived with my grandmother at the time. Grandmother was a teacher and she could word everything just right,” said Hankey, who revealed she felt the queen deserved a card on her birthdsy, but did not expect to ever receive anything from her in return.

Hankey is disappointed that the queen did not appear in public for her birthday this year, but she understands that this year is a year like no other due to the coronavirus pandemic. She is looking forward to receiving her card from the queen, but anticipates it may be a little late this year as the royal monarch helps deal with the global COVID-19 crisis.

She knows the queen must receive a huge number of cards each year. Hankey also gets a healthy amount of post–she told The Dickinson Press that she received more than 100 cards on her 90th birthday!
