An aquatic park is under fire after a nine-day-old baby dolphin died in front of visitors. The incident happened at the Varna Dolphinarium in Bulgaria.

While an investigation over the cause of death is still underway, many people are blaming the water park for working the dolphin too much. Witness Bisser Lyubenov told BTV Novinite that they were watching the animals when a disturbance occurred and the dolphins stopped playing and performing tricks for the audience.

While park officials state that this did not happen during an official performance, there are witnesses who say that they could see what was happening while sitting in the venue's cafe, according to the BBC.

During the peak summer season, it is not unusual for the dolphins to be required to perform up to four times per day. Despite being just days old, the newborn dolphin was required to perform alongside the adults.

According to Yavor Gechev, an official with animal protection organization Four Paws, five dolphins and one seal have passed away while under the care of this facility within the last five years.

Gechev said that this type of mortality rate is a sign that the facility is not even providing the minimal standards of care for their animals. The staff at the water park have repeatedly denied that the baby passed away during a live performance.
