Lionel Richie is a well-known and respected performer in the music industry. He has been in the business for several decades, having first risen to fame during the 1970s as the co-lead singer and songwriter of the Commodores.
Afterward, he branched out into a solo career, with this venture starting in the 1980s. From that point on, he continued to write music for other artists as well as release music of his own. Some of his best-known songs include "All Night Long (All Night)," "Hello," and "Say You, Say Me."
While many people are aware of Lionel and his legacy, some may not know that he is the adoptive father of Nicole Richie. Nicole was born on Sept. 21, 1981, and is a television personality, fashion designer, musician, and actress. Her biological parents also worked in the entertainment industry, which is how Lionel came to know the family. However, it was clear that Nicole's parents needed help, and she needed somewhere that she could really call home, which resulted in Lionel adopting her when she was just a little girl.
Because of this, Nicole became the eldest of all Lionel's children. In 1994, Brenda Harvey, Lionel's wife, gave birth to their second and eldest son, Miles Brockman, and their youngest child, Sofia Richie, in 1988.
Sofia and Nicole became sisters, with the latter stepping up as a good role model for the other. Many have even taken a particular interest in how much the two sisters look very alike, despite not being biologically related.
Like her older sister, Nicole has pursued a career in fashion and entertainment, but Sofia pursued modeling instead of fashion design, which is what gave her the train ticket to stardom, among many other things.

Around the time that Lionel Richie's solo career was really starting to take off, he found himself becoming a father. He married his college sweetheart Brenda Harvey in October 1975. Prior to their divorce in 1993, they adopted Nicole, who nowadays is known for her time on the TV series "The Simple Life," as well as being the founder of House of Harlow.
Nicole was born on Sept. 21, 1981, and had a tough childhood. Her parents knew Lionel through work and confessed to him that they were struggling to stay afloat financially. Lionel and Brenda offered to help and invited Nicole to stay with them before ultimately adopting her when she was nine years old, according to ABC News.
"Nicole was actually a godsend," Lionel said.
"She was a little girl who needed a shot. She was used to people coming and going. She looked at me and I'd say, 'I'm not going anywhere.'"
Since being adopted by Lionel, Nicole found herself living in California, where she worked hard at making a name for herself. She first found fame during the mid-2000s with the reality TV series "The Simple Life" alongside her best friend and fellow socialite Paris Hilton. Nicole was subsequently thrust into the spotlight and has remained there since.
She has continued to appear on television and is the founder of a lifestyle brand, House of Harlow. She is also married to Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden. The pair first began dating in 2006 and were married in 2010. They have two children together and live in Los Angeles, California.
But despite her new family and flourishing career, Nicole still hasn't forgotten her duties as a sister to Sofia, who she has grown closer to, especially after they made up following the Scott Disick issue.

Sofia Richie, Lionel Richie's youngest daughter, was born on Aug. 24, 1998. Like her sister Sofia, she excelled in the fashion industry, but as a model. She modeled for brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, and Adidas, among many others.
Taking after his father and elder sister, Sofia has always managed to stay in the limelight. Shortly after her brief relationship with Justin Bieber in 2016, she became linked with Scott Disick, who was 15 years older than her.
This predicament didn't sit well with her father, and especially with Nicole.
According to US Magazine Weekly, Sofia's fashion designer sister, Nicole, "never fully supported" the former's relationship with Disick. Aside from this, Nicole, including her father, Lionel, had been "wary" of the unlikely relationship that Sofia and Scott had.
Primarily, the family was troubled because of their age gap and serious commitment to being a stepmother to three kids at a young age should their relationship progress.
Because of their hesitation, Nicole maintained a safe distance from Sofia to respect her choices and decisions, putting a strain on their relationship.
But ultimately, the couple broke up, and the publication revealed in 2020 that Nicole and Sofia have been spending more time together than ever since Sofia started spending less time with Scott.
In celebration of their sisterhood, Sofia and Nicole have launched a new spring collection for Nicole's House of Harlow 1960 line. Designing their collaboration project was easy, contrary to what others would have anticipated – there had been no reported sibling fight that ensued, Vogue reported in 2021.
With their new-founded love of working together, the sister duo even jokingly revealed that they would want to dress their father in the future, probably with something embarrassing like a bikini!
