Nicole Kidman is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most sought-after and talented actresses. Not only has she impressed critics with her artistic range — she’s received plaudits for kids films like “Paddington” to adult psycho-dramas like “Eyes Wide Shut” — but the star also has a collection of once-in-a-lifetime accolades. She won an Oscar for her 2002 performance in “The Hours” in addition to a BAFTA, five Golden Globes, two Emmys and one Screen Actor’s Guild Award.

It’s no wonder, then, that Kidman has a lot of fans interested in her life and career.

Kidman, who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Australian parents, got her start in show business when she was just 16 years old. In 1983, the teen appeared in a remake of an Australian classic, “Bush Christmas.” And that same year, the up-and-coming actress landed a supporting role on “Five Mile Creek.” But it wasn’t until the late 1980s and early ’90s that Kidman’s career really took off.

If there was one film that changed everything, it was Philip Noyce’s 1989 thriller “Dead Calm.” Its success led to other career-defining roles. Kidman followed her performance in the thriller with a role in “Days of Thunder,” the first of three films in which she would star with her first husband, Tom Cruise. Thanks to the film’s commercial success, she quickly became a Hollywood mainstay.

More recently, she’s made a name for herself as one of television’s most talented actresses, earning multiple awards for her role in HBO’s “Big Little Lies.”

Even though Kidman became successful thanks to her talent in acting, there was something that held her back early on in her career because of her physical appearance. Read on below what happened to the actress.

Regarding Nicole Kidman’s personal life, the actress was famously previously married to Tom Cruise. According to an article published by Hollywood Life, the ex-couple had two children, both of whom were adopted after their births.

Both stars supported each other throughout their career as they constantly attended red-carpet events for their individual projects.

However, their romance didn’t last as Cruise filed for divorce in 2001 and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their separation.

Later on, the public first didn’t know that Kidman also became romantically involved with Lenny Kravitz as they got secretly engaged in 2003. The actress only acknowledged their relationship in an interview with Vanity Fair in 2017.

Kidman went on to meet Keith Urban in 2005. The country singer got his future wife’s number at the time, and the actress admitted that she had a crush on him.

However, the musician didn’t call or even message her for the next four months until he finally got the chance to do so. That’s why they went on their first date.

In May 2006, the couple got engaged and tied the knot the month after. Kidman and Urban have two daughters together.

Aside from her acting talent, one thing that stands out the most about the actress is her height, as she stands 1.8 meters or 5 feet 11 inches tall.

Even though being tall is somewhat of a blessing to others, this became a negative connotation to Kidman because there was a point in her career when she was criticized for being too tall compared to her female peers in the industry.

In January 2024, Kidman appeared in an episode of the “Radio Times Podcast” where she spoke about being teased because of her height.

The actress had been tall ever since she was a kid because when she was 13 years old, she was already 5 feet 9 inches tall.

“I was told, ‘You won’t have a career. You’re too tall,’” she recalled

Kidman also looked back at the time when she auditioned for the role of Annie. At the time, she didn’t have an agent, and her height was way above the required measurement, so she had to talk her way in and please them just to audition. However, she never got the chance to play the role.

“I say I’m 5ft 10 1/2in but I’m really 5ft 11in. I was teased and called Stalky. People would say, ‘How’s the air up there?’ Now, I get, ‘You’re so much taller than I thought,’ or men grappling with how high my heels should be,’” she added.

Even though she had bad experiences because of her height, Kidman learned how to embrace herself and appreciate her height because she could use it in her work.

Regarding any health issues, the actress said she was healthy except for certain issues, as she said, “Hey, I’m incredibly grateful to be healthy and walking around. Having said that, I’ve had knee issues and all sorts of things, partly because of my height!”

She also said in the conversation that she taught her daughters a valuable lesson as she recalled telling them that none of the criticism matters because what’s important is “you allow other people to either say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to you, and whether you accept that. Inner resilience as a human being, that’s the superpower, really.”
