Niagara Falls Freezes Over As Polar Vortex Hits The US

Feb 06, 2019 by apost team

Thanks to the polar vortex that's swept over the United States, major landmarks and bodies of water like the Falls have been transformed into incredible natural ice sculptures. Lake Michigan is an icy expanse of fog and mist, while Niagara Falls is partially frozen and absolutely enchanting.

The Midwest has been hit with the coldest temperatures, which have plummeted to -50 degrees. To put that into perspective, Chicago and Minnesota have been colder than Antarctica or Siberia this week.

The cold has carried over, albeit less intense, to the East Coast as well. Parts of New York and Canada, in particular, are experiencing ultra-cold temperatures. Niagara Falls currently resembles The Wall from "Game of Thrones," appearing motionless and towering hundreds of feet.

This isn't the first time the U.S. has been plundered by icy temperatures; a polar vortex in 2014 lasted through late winter and covered parts of the U.S. in Canada in heavy ice and snow.

The current vortex is just as intense, and people have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible. Residents of Chicago and surrounding states have been told to cover their faces and avoid speaking and breathing deeply outdoors if they have to brave the cold for whatever reason.

The National Weather Service advises citizens to "protect your lungs from the cold air." Many cities such as Chicago and New York have opened warming stations and shelters for people in need, and if you or someone you know needs assistance, call 311 immediately.

The coldest day in 150 years was recorded in Chicago recently, so this polar vortex might be amazing, but it's also extremely dangerous. Use the current temperatures as an excuse to drink extra hot chocolate, and don't forget your fuzzy socks.
