Newborn Puppies Ignored By Their Mommy, Get An Interesting Caretaker - A Cat

Nov 27, 2018 by apost team

Smoochie, a scruffy black dog with a long snout, was unwilling or unable to take care of her newborn puppies. For whatever reason, instead of nursing and nurturing her pups, Smoochie ignored them. Although the puppies whined for their mother’s milk and care, Smoochie strolled around her owners' yard as if she hadn’t a care in the world. Enter Miss Kitty, the family cat.

Miss Kitty Loses Her Litter

Not long before Smoochie gave birth, Miss Kitty had given birth to her litter of kittens. The pets' owners, Missy and Ryan Grant, had no idea where Miss Kitty had set up her nursery.

After following Miss Kitty’s every move, they later discovered the litter of kittens living across the street in a space beneath their neighbor’s trailer. And while space may have seemed warm and safe, it was not an ideal nursery for the newborn kittens.

By the time Missy and Ryan found the litter, the kittens were sickly, and every one of them eventually died.

Miss Kitty Adopts A Litter

As luck would have it, Smoochie gave birth to her litter of pups soon after, and when Miss Kitty noticed the puppies were not being cared for by their own mother, she stepped in and took over. The Grants’ neighbor Linda, while eating lunch one day was roused to the door by the continuous yowling of puppies.

She got up to see Miss Kitty carrying a puppy in her mouth. She took the pup across the yard to where her kittens had been born, beneath the trailer. Miss Kitty went back repeatedly to retrieve each puppy, one at a time. Once they were all in the kittens’ former home, Miss Kitty cuddled with her newly adopted litter.

When the Grants noticed the puppies were no longer in their yard, Linda told them what Miss Kitty had done. Missy called the local news, and they covered the story.

Miss Kitty Nurses The Litter

Just as if they were her own litter of kittens, Miss Kitty stood close watch over the puppies and disallowed anyone or anything to get too close. When Missy tried to see how the puppies were doing, Miss Kitty bit her.

Later, after Miss Kitty cooled off, she let her owners transfer the puppies to a safer and more hospitable home. Like the good mother she was, Miss Kitty nursed the five puppies and two kittens that had also been abandoned by their mother and were donated by a caller into the news show "It's a Miracle."

Miss Kitty Teaches Us A Lesson

Missy Grant called the veterinarian to find out whether Miss Kitty’s milk supply would be substantial enough for the seven adopted offspring. Unfortunately, the vet said the Grants would have to force Smoochie to nurse her pups as well if they were going to thrive.

Missy and Ryan held the reluctant Smoochie in place while her puppies nursed. According to Missy Grant, “Miss Kitty, after her kittens died, felt the need or want to go take over the puppies.”

Call it empathy, healing from heartbreak, or maternal instinct, but whatever motivated her, Miss Kitty decided she was going to have a litter of her own--even if they were a different species altogether.
