In a small town nestled in the heart of Rajasthan, India, something truly extraordinary has happened. A baby girl, born to a loving family, has captured the world's attention with her astonishing condition of being born with 14 fingers and 12 toes!

This remarkable birth is not just a medical curiosity; it's being hailed as a divine blessing. The proud parents, Gopal Bhattacharya, a police constable, and Sarju Devi, were overjoyed when their unique bundle of joy entered the world, the New York Post reported on Sept. 19. 2023. Little did they know that their daughter would become the talk of the town and a symbol of something much larger than life.

Imagine having seven fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot! You might wonder if this could be a cause for concern, but the good news is that the baby is perfectly healthy. Dr. BS Soni, a medic at the hospital where she was born, assured everyone that there's no harm in having 26 fingers. It's simply a genetic anomaly, a quirk of nature if you will.

The condition that has everyone talking is known as polydactyly. It's a rare genetic condition where people are born with extra fingers or toes. The word itself comes from Greek, meaning "many fingers." While the extra fingers are usually next to the fifth finger or toe, polydactyly can come in various forms.

According to the Boston Children’s Hospital, one in every 500 to 1,000 babies born may be affected by polydactyly on one hand. The most common treatment for polydactyly is surgery to remove the extra finger. But whether this baby girl will undergo surgery remains a question mark. It all depends on the functionality of the extra fingers and the family's decision.

But what makes this story even more captivating is the belief of the baby's family. They see her as the reincarnation of Dholagarh Devi, a revered Hindu goddess.

Apparently, just a stone's throw away from where the baby was born, there's a temple dedicated to this goddess. If you visit, you'll find statues of Dholagarh Devi with multiple arms, symbolizing her divine presence. It's no wonder the family feels a deep spiritual connection.

"My sister has given birth to a baby who has 26 fingers, and we are considering it to be the incarnation of Dholagarh Devi," an unnamed uncle of the baby told the media. "We are very happy."

Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Preethika Shetty said in an interview with The Indian Express that the cause of polydactyly "remains unclear," but it all starts with the development of the embryo in the womb.

"If this transformation takes longer than usual, one finger may split into two, resulting in an extra finger," she said.

“The doctor will determine if your baby has polydactyly either through prenatal ultrasound or after birth. He or she will examine your child’s hands and feet for any additional digits and diagnose the specific type of polydactyly," Shetty added.

In July 2022, a newborn baby also astonished the public after she was born with an extra pair of legs and arms. The tot was hailed a "miracle of nature," and was even compared to a reincarnated version of a god, according to the Mirror.

The baby was delivered at the Shahabad Community Health Centre in Hardoi, a district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Despite the medical rarity, miraculously both the mother and child were healthy. After news spread across the area, locals flocked to the hospital to see the baby.
