Dog trainer Rebecca Forrest tells us that dogs use their paws as a way to communicate with others, so when they are pawing at you, it probably means that they are trying to deliver a message to you, as she details here on the website The Dog Clinic.

First, she said that dogs use pawing as a way to get attention. Since dogs are bred to be domestic, humans as their main source of entertainment and security. They don’t have any scruples showing that they feel neglected and begging for more loving.

Pawing can also mean that your doggy wants more to eat or is feeling a little insecure about a particular situation. If you think that your dog is stressed, your best option is to assure them that things are okay and then distract them by capturing their attention on something else.

But what about dogs that paw when you’re already patting them? Obviously, they are already getting attention and they aren’t feeling stressed, so you probably wonder what the answer could be to this peculiar behavior. According to experts, this could be a dog’s way of trying to return their favor. They are enjoying your attention so much that they just want to love you back, but aren’t sure how.

Forrest said that a dog that puts his paw on you while you are giving him love is trying to add to the connection between you two while also giving some affection back.
