According to SFGate, Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman in Durban, South Africa, in connection with the baby discovered, last week, abandoned in a Newlands’ storm drain. The infant was rescued and immediately transported to Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital for treatment.
The woman, who is currently in police custody, was picked up from another local hospital after an intensive investigation, according to Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, a KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson.
"A 27-year-old suspect has been arrested ... while at a local hospital. She was arrested for attempted murder relating to a child found in Newlands East last week,"Mbhele said.
Pedestrians first reported hearing the baby’s cries at 7:30 on February 11, near the intersection of Barracuda Road and Herring Circle. They could not, at first, pinpoint the exact origins of the sound, but when one passerby went searching, they found the squalling infant trapped in a nearby storm drain, which was buried beneath several feet of earth.

Onlookers contacted emergency services, and first responders quickly arrived, only to find the baby’s location especially troublesome for rescue, as an attempt to excavate the pipe around the infant could cause the surrounding dirt to collapse inwards, on top of her.
Local residents came to the rescuers' aid by stripping off their cabinet doors, which were used to shore up the earth around the pipe. Responders then freed the trapped baby with nothing more than a hammer and chisel, over the course of a three-hour rescue.
Once they freed her, rescuers discovered the baby girl was no more than three days old and still had her umbilical cord attached.
Dr Timoth Hardcastle, who works at the hospital that first received the infant told CNN:
“It's really a miracle that this baby was saved. The doctors have given this baby a clean bill of health, and she will be transferred to another hospital,"
Dr Dhlomo wrote a post on his social media account stating:
“This little one was very fortunate to be alive and well,Some of the babies who get abandoned do not come out alive.”
To honor the infant’s unlikely survival, officials have named her Sibanisethu, meaning “our ray of light.” What do you think? Is the name strong enough for a girl who survived so much, at just three days old?
