Neil Patrick Harris’ Sweet Love Story With Husband David Burtka

Neil Patrick Harris, 50, met his husband David Burtka in 2004, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. 

According to Out, Neil met David in 2004 through a mutual friend. 

“I ran into my friend Kate one day and she was with this brooding, James Dean–type guy in a leather jacket who gave me the head nod and then turned away,” he said. “I assumed he was Kate’s boyfriend and said, “Nicely done.” And she said, “David? He’s not playing on my team, but he has a boyfriend.”

Following that encounter, although Neil was interested in David, he decided against pursuing him as David was already in a relationship. 

“I was always around when he was around, hoping the stars would align,” he admitted. “When we all hung out for the first time -- I was invited by Kate to an American Idol viewing party -- I just stammered around him. I couldn’t take my eyes off him.”

The pair eventually started hanging out platonically. Then suddenly, David broke up with his boyfriend. 

“I ended up breaking with my boyfriend, and a week later, Neil and I had a date,” David told Out. “We started hanging out every single night, and after three months, it was just non-stop. We talk on the phone at least eight times a day and text at least 25 times a day.”

In 2010, the couple became fathers to fraternal twins born via a surrogate mother. Then, when the Marriage Equality Bill was passed by the New York state senate in 2011, Neil took to Twitter to announce their engagement. He did, however, clarify, that they had been engaged since 2007.

"We were on our way to an event at an Indian casino 45 minutes out of town in a limousine, and David wanted to stop for some reason that I didn't quite get,” Neil told Out. “And then he got on one knee and proposed, and I was so freaked out by it that I said, 'Yes,' but I didn't know what it meant. Then I got the ring and loved it."

The couple wed in 2014 in Italy.
