It is hard to believe that it has been thirty years since "Doogie Howser, M.D." premiered on television.

While he was unknown at the time that the program first aired, it did not take long for Neil Patrick Harris to become a star. Now that the show is celebrating its 30-year anniversary, Harris is spoke to GMA to reflect on his part in shaping the popular sitcom.

The show followed Dr. Howser, a young child prodigy practicing as a doctor. The endearing program aired nearly 100 episodes over its run. Harris earned a Golden Globe for his work in 1992.

Although it was not always Harris' goal to be an actor, he knew that he wanted to entertain others through singing and dancing. The lights and action of Hollywood certainly took the small-town New Mexico native by surprise. However, he was able to harness the opportunity and use it to propel him to stardom.

In making the show, Harris said that his goal was to always make creator Steven Bochco proud of his work. Harris went on to star in the hit show "How I Met Your Mother" in addition to his role hosting The Oscars. The openly gay actor is also known for his work working to promote equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
