Music legend Neil Diamond is well known for his song "Sweet Caroline," but in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic that is sweeping the world, he has re-written some of the lyrics to his famous hit to focus on the importance of social distancing.

The 79-year-old singer treated his fans to a special live Twitter performance of "Sweet Caroline." However, it wasn't the classic 1969 song – he updated some of the lyrics to address the need for social distancing and washing hands. He was joined by his Golden Retriever, who seemed to be enjoying the performance too!

It looks like the singer is putting his self-quarantine time at home to good use. He specifically altered the part of the song that comes just before the chorus. The actual lyrics are "Hands, touching hands. Reaching out, touching me, touching you." But due to the coronavirus outbreak he changed the words to sing: "Hands, washing hands. Reaching out, don't touch me." This is to remind people of the importance of following the guidelines to keep society safe.

Although Diamond had fun performing the song to his followers, he also had an important message that accompanied the song.

"Hi everybody. This is Neil Diamond. I know we're going through a tough time right now. But I love ya, and I think maybe if we sing together, well, we'll just feel a little bit better. Give it a try."

Fans were delighted to see Diamond performing music again, especially as he retired from touring in 2018, reports the Metro.

Who would have thought such a classic song would one day take a health stance. What do you think of these new lyrics? Spread the updated song to everyone you know, so we remember the important takeway – to stay home, wash our hands, and stay safe.
