Neighbors Arrive To Help Farmer With Terminal Cancer When He Can't Complete Harvesting Crops

What is a “Harvest Bee”? It's when a large group of nearby farmers plus others in the community band together to bring in the crop of a sick neighbor.

That is exactly what happened when harvesting his large yearly wheat crop on 1,200 acres would have taken ailing Larry Yockey three weeks, but it only took six hours when accomplished by almost 60 compassionate neighbors.

Fellow farmers with their donated time and equipment were joined by volunteer firemen with fire trucks, mechanics with service rigs, workers from a nearby chemical company that brought their water trucks, and others who were willing to put aside their own harvesting and time-off activities and help someone who desperately needed the aid to bring in his crop.

“They stepped in unbeknownst to me and said don’t worry about the harvest, we’ll handle it for you,” Larry told KHQ.

Yockey is a struggling 63-year-old battling skin cancer that has reached Stage 4, also known as Metastatic Melanoma. The most advanced phase is Stage 4, which is a serious form of cancer that has spread to other organs from the lymph nodes, such as the bones, lungs, brain, liver, abdomen or stomach.

The American Melanoma Foundation has a list of local support groups for victims to share their experiences, learn how others have overcome the challenges, and to get needed encouragement.

“I didn’t know whether I was going to be able to harvest like I did in years past,” Yockey said, as per People. “It’s bittersweet, but I finally had to tell them, ‘No.’ ”

CBS News stated plans to help Yockey with his harvest were in the works for months.

“It’s not describable the gratitude I have for what’s going on,” Larry told CBS.
