Neglected Ducks Who Had Never Seen Water Enjoy Their First Swim

Apr 22, 2019 by apost team

A flock of ducks, who spent their entire lives locked in cages, had their first taste of freedom. The ducks had a chance to cool off in a pond when they went swimming for the first time.

The Woodstock Farm Sanctuary removed the ducks from a hoarding situation a few weeks prior to releasing the video.

The ducks had spent their whole lives in tiny pens until the Ulster County SPCA was made aware of the situation. The animal shelter petitioned a judge for a warrant to seize the ducks but it was an entire year before the ducks were saved. When animal rescuers were finally given the go-ahead to seize the ducks, they were appalled by the condition the ducks were in.

The ducks had no access to fresh water or food. They were emaciated, and some had lost their toes to frostbite.

The neglected ducks had never seen sunlight or walked in the grass before. They spent weeks recovering under the watchful eye of a veterinarian. Eventually, they were cleared to start exploring their new home.

At first, the flock didn't know what to do with their newfound freedom. They huddled together in a group and raced around their new enclosure. They made their way into the pond, but they were unsure of what to think of the water and made a hasty exit.

Staff from the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary helped the birds adjust to their new home. They coaxed the ducks back into the water. At first, the timid waterfowl were unsure of what to do but one brave duck decided to dunk his head underwater. Soon, all the ducks were happily splashing in the pond. They literally took to their new situation like a duck to water.

It breaks our heart knowing that these ducks, who were meant to spend their lives flying and swimming, were treated so terribly. We're incredibly grateful for all the work the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary does to save neglected and abused animals.
