According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department., the pair of lucky hikers were found alive and well on April 10 after being missing for five days

The savvy hikers survived their time in the wilderness by rationing their meager food supplies and making the water safe for drinking through a specially designed filtration straw. They were able to make campfires to keep warm at night.

Desplinter said that the two just simply lost sight of the trail after attempting to take a different route in order to avoid the ice and snow of Cucamonga Peak.

The valley that they descended through ended up being more dangerous than they had anticipated, causing them to lose their way.

After being rescued, the two were reunited with their relieved families at the Mount Baldy Fire Station. The hikers were especially thankful for the rescuers who did not give up on the search.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department also took the time to thank all of the volunteers who gave of their time and efforts to find the two hikers.
