Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson had the type of love everyone dreamed of. They had the kind of love story that was portrayed in the very same Hollywood movies they starred in. However, this was before tragedy cut their 16-year-long marriage short.

Their story began when they both performed on Broadway in 1993 in "Anna Christie." Natasha was 29 at the time and married to a producer, Robert Fox. This didn’t stop the romance from blooming between Liam and Natasha, however.

Liam later stated that he had never had that type of chemistry with another person before. He described their love as a kind of dance that was free.

Their chemistry did not remain a secret for long. It became obvious to everyone. The show was very popular and both Liam and Natasha received Tony nominations for their performances. Fortunately for Liam, 40 at that time, Robert and Natasha’s marriage was already falling apart. Natasha fell very much in love with Liam.

Liam had a reputation as a ladies’ man around this time, but this didn’t phase Natasha at all. She understood only too well why women were always falling in love with him.

Natasha was celebrating her 30th birthday when Liam sent her a card. He was on the set of "Schindler’s List" during this time, being cast in the title role of Oskar Schindler. The card said, “You're catching up with me. Lots of love, Oskar." To his surprise, Natasha found the card very unromantic, saying it sounded like it came from a buddy. She was upfront with her response, asking him straight up just what their relationship was.

This was all it took and Liam was head over heels in love with her. He said, “That was when I knew I really loved this person. I thought, 'This is real and genuine and is something that has to be protected.'" Soon after, they married in upstate New York in the summer of 1994.

After getting married, Liam landed a roll in "Nell." Natasha hated the idea of being apart while he was filming. She was hoping to work with him again. Her wish soon became a reality. Natasha was cast in "Nell" as well and they got to star opposite each other.

Their lives continued to move at lightning speed. They hadn’t even been married a year when they had their first child together, Micheal, during the spring of 1995. They wasted no time and had another son, Daniel, just 18 months later.

Sadly, everything was to change in 2009. At the age of 45, Natasha tragically passed away. She suffered a bad fall while skiing in Quebec. She first thought it was just a minor bump on the head. What resulted was a fatal brain injury.

Liam was in Toronto at the time, filming "Chloe." He rushed to the hospital to be by her side. When he got there, the doctors told him the tragic news that his wife was brain dead.

"She and I had made a pact," he recalled. "If any of us got into a vegetative state that we'd pull the plug. So when I saw her and saw all these tubes and stuff, that was my immediate thought. But [she] donated three of her organs, so she's keeping three people alive at the moment." Liam did what his wife would have wanted.

When he looks back at their marriage, Liam remembers his favorite things about Natasha and the time they spent together. He loved her maternal love and generosity. She had a fierce and infectious motherly instinct. She would look after others and cook for everyone.

Now, it has been over eight years since her passing. Liam still feels grief that can occasionally be overwhelming. He told Loaded magazine that when he hears the door opening, part of him still expects it to be her. This feeling was even stronger in the first few years after she was gone.

A few years ago, Liam shared a message remembering his wife with his fans on social media. He said his late wife taught him how to love unconditionally. He told everyone to make the most of the time they have with their partners and cherish them.

Liam Neeson's feelings for the love of his life remind us to be thankful for the ones we love because we never know when we could lose them. If you feel as touched by their love affair as we are, leave us a comment in the notes and make sure your loved ones know about it too.
