When it comes to country music, Naomi Judd is one of the few who can say they truly impacted the industry. She has gifts as a singer, songwriter and performer and has also acted over the course of her career. She is most famous for her work alongside her daughter Wynonna as a member of the musical duo The Judds.
Judd was born on Jan. 11, 1946, in Ashland, Kentucky. She had humble beginnings and also went through some hardships early on in life. Her brother died of leukemia when he was just 17 years old in 1965. Judd became a mom around the same time, giving birth to her first daughter Wynonna in 1964 when she was only 18 years old. Judd welcomed her second daughter Ashley into the family in 1968. At the time, she had been married to a man named Michael Ciminella, but after they divorced, Judd raised Wynonna and Ashley all on her own.
However, she continued to pursue her passions and made a career for herself in music. Both of her children have also grown up to become famous in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, this didn’t mean that Judd had everything in her life completely sorted out, as she was met with more hardships at a high point in her career.
Over the years, Judd has taken breaks in her career to tackle her health complications and to refocus on what matters most to her. Today, she is 76 years old, is still a well-respected name in the music industry, and has even continued to prove herself as a working actress.

Teaming up with her daughter Wynonna, Judd formed the musical duo called The Judds. Together, they released six studio albums between 1983 and 1991. They received critical acclaim and were fan favorites in the country music scene, winning five Grammy Awards and nine Country Music Association Awards. The Judds were also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2021.
In 2015, Judd reflected on what it was like to win her first Grammy. According to Entertainment Tonight, they took home the trophy thanks to their song “Mama He’s Crazy.” Judd said, “Wynonna and I both said the same thing, that it felt like we were in a car crash ‘cause it happened so fast it was life-changing.” The pair later took home more awards for songs such as “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days)” and “Love Can Build a Bridge.”
At one point, Judd and her daughter were one of the most successful duos in the industry. However, their career came to an abrupt stop at the start of the 1990s when Judd was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. According to Health, this is a blood-borne virus that causes inflammation of the liver. Other celebrities who have been vocal about their struggles with Hepatitis C include Pamela Anderson and Steven Tyler.
Speaking with TODAY in 2021, Judd revealed that she had gotten the disease from a needle at a hospital. At the time of her diagnosis, she was told that she only had three years to live. According to The Boot, in October 1990, Judd announced that she was retiring from the music scene.

The Judds wrapped their farewell tour the following year. Afterward, Judd went on to create the Naomi Judd Education and Research Fund and became a spokesperson for the American Liver Foundation to raise awareness about Hepatitis C.
Even though Judd was no longer creating music following the end of The Judds, she was still very active in the entertainment industry. Judd found a career in acting and appeared in several TV movies and TV shows. She also was a judge on “Can You Duet” in 2008. On top of that, Judd has also shared many of her life experiences and personal ideals by authoring several books. She even reunited with Wynonna later on, to revive The Judds for a short period of time.
The famous woman also used her platform for the better to raise awareness about the deadly disorder of Hepatitis C and help those less fortunate. According to AARP, Judd grew up barely making it financially as she was a young single mother. After becoming established, Judd put her fame and fortune to use by organizing a food drive to stock the Appalachia food pantry. She has focused much of her charitable efforts in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.
Today, Judd is 76 years old and is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the country music legend turned actress is still very busy. In 2021, she starred in a movie episode of “V. C. Andrews’ Landry Family” called “V. C. Andrews’ Ruby.” According to TODAY, Judd played Caroline Ruby, the grandmother of a young woman whose world was turned upside down.
