It’s every parent’s worst fear to not know where their child is. It can be easy to fall down a rabbit hole of bad thoughts while still trying to stay hopeful and optimistic. For one set of parents in Cypress, Texas, it felt like their worst nightmare was coming true when their 6-year-old son named Colton didn’t return home from school one day in November 2020.
It was the first day of the school year that Colton was attending school in person at Postma Elementary after spending months of virtual learning. The young boy was given all of the instructions he needed to make sure his first day went smoothly, like knowing what school bus to ride and where to get off. It was the second year he would be riding the bus.
When it came time for Colton to come home and meet up with his older brother Gavin at the bus stop, Colton wasn’t there. Arlene Lightfoot-Franklin, Colton’s mom, instantly began panicking after hearing the news. She called the school who assured her that her son got on the designated bus, but Colton was still nowhere to be found. The school and the bus transportation had no answers for Lightfoot-Franklin. The mother quickly began driving around the neighborhood, searching for her son.
A short while later, something remarkable happened. A mystery woman appeared on the family’s home security camera footage standing beside Colton. Finally, the young boy’s family could breathe a sigh of relief as they realized that their child had been returned home safe and sound.

When Gavin realized that his little brother didn’t get off the bus at his designated stop, he immediately called Lightfoot-Franklin to let her know, as per KHOU 11. The mother sprung into action calling everyone she could to try to find Colton. When it seemed like no one had any answers, Colton’s parents began driving around the Miramesa neighborhood in Cypress, searching for their son.
Shortly after, Lightfoot-Franklin received a notification from her Ring doorbell camera saying that motion was detected by her home’s front door. The video showed a mystery woman standing alongside Colton, asking him if he knew if his mom was home or what her phone number was.
According to KHOU 11, the woman was driving along West Road when she saw Colton running and stopped to help him. Colton’s teacher had placed a sticker with his address on his shirt, and the woman used that to help bring him home. When they saw the Ring footage, Colton’s parents raced home to be reunited with their son.
Lightfoot-Franklin called the mystery woman angel and hugged her after meeting. “We just want to thank her,” she told KHOU 11. “I don’t know what we can do, but I just want to formally thank her.” The two women later exchanged phone numbers.
According to KHOU 11, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD has since issued an apology regarding the situation with Colton and opened an investigation to find out what happened. The Cypress-Fairbanks ISD also released a statement ensuring the safety of all of its students in the future.
