“My Girl” Made The Temptations First Male Group On The Motown Label To Achieve No.1

Music has seen a lot of transformation over the last few decades, with pop music one genre that has certainly seen its fair share of change. While most of us may enjoy a little Taylor Swift while we’re battling traffic on the way to work, there’s just something about the classics that touch a part of our souls that the new pop tunes don't.

The Temptations is one group that swept the nation through the 1960s and beyond. This band was made up of teenagers who hit the scene in 1955 when Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks joined Wiley Waller and Kell Osbourne. Initially, the band didn’t even call themselves The Temptations – in fact, they would go through several name changes before finally landing on their title in 1961, according to The History of Rock.

Over the 59 years that the band played together, they managed to get three Grammy Awards for their music. They won their fourth in 2013, as the Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, according to the Grammy Awards website.

While they had several songs that were hits, the one that most people know is the ever-popular tune “My Girl”.

If you’ve listened to the radio or watched any kind of television in your lifetime, then you’ve probably heard the song. My Girl became fiercely popular with its sweet lyrics and upbeat tune, earning it the number 88 place on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Rather than being depressing or vengeful like so many pop songs today, My Girl is one that you could easily sing to a girlfriend or wife to show your devotion and love.

To celebrate the old hit single, we’ve resurrected a video clip of the group performing My Girl. The five men sang while they danced. The dancing may not be the best choreography in the world, but it certainly is catchy and cute. Rather than making things seem hard, The Temptations presented an act that was simply cool and fun to watch. “My Girl” made the Temptations the first male group on the Motown label to achieve No. 1, according to Rolling Stone.

While people give The Temptations credits for many of the boy bands that we see today, the truth remains that none of them are quite able to match up to the innocence and feel-good fun that surrounded the old bands.

Watch the “My Girl” video for yourself and see what you think of the classic performance. Do you feel like their dancing and singing is better than what we have today? Once you’re done watching the video, invite your friends to see it too so that they can enjoy the old-time feel of some decent pop music.
