Chief Troy Jackson was a well-respected and admired member of the South Metro Fire Rescue in Denver. Every day, he served his community and dedicated himself to ensuring that others remained out of harm's way. His loyal team looked up to their Chief and his leadership can still be felt throughout the area. Sadly, Chief Jackson had to combat a certain type of cancer that was directly related to the work that he had committed to performing during his professional life.
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare form of cancer that is caused by carcinogens absorbed through the skin. People who come into regular contact with chemicals and soot are at a higher risk for developing this condition when compared to others. Unfortunately, firefighters fit this description.
They risk their lives to run into burning buildings in order to save others. While collapsing roofs, falling walls, and raging flames are all potential causes of death, tiny particles can also cause problems within the human body.

Well into his unfortunate diagnosis, Chief Jackson fought hard to make necessary changes within the industry to help make the job much safer for others who dedicated their lives to saving others from fires. Tragically, after six hard-fought years of surgical procedures, chemotherapy, and radiation, the venerated Chief Jackson passed away, CBS4 Denver reports.
Before he passed away, Jackson was able to witness his daughter's graduation from the police academy. Like her father, Jackson's daughter went into public service.
In between his tragic passing and the actual funeral, Chief Jackson's colleagues were prepared to carry on the longstanding tradition known as Honor Watch, CBS4 Denver said in a related article. This is where firefighters stand watch over the casket of a beloved friend until the burial occurs.
Firefighters from around the area were signing in massive groups to pay their respects for their fallen brother.
