These traveling motorists were in for a surprise when they saw a police officer standing alone in the pouring rain. In Maryland, a harrowing rescue effort began to unfold in the center of a highway. Sharnise Hawkins-Graham, a Greenbelt police officer, oversaw the rescue efforts.

Two passing motorists, a woman named Carolyn Hammett along with her husband, stopped the vehicle when they saw that the policewoman was standing in the center of the highway. It was clear that the officer was trying to protect something, but from a distance, it was impossible to see what that was.

At first, they were alarmed. But that was when they saw that the officer had a huge grin on her face.

The husband left the vehicle and headed to aid the officer with the help of a trusty umbrella. At the officer's feet was a snapping turtle that was attempting to cross the drenched road.

Officer Hawkins-Graham was worried for the safety of the turtle, because the visibility from the road was so limited. She decided the only course of action was to protect the turtle personally from the traffic and rainstorm.

She did enlist the help of animal control due to the potential danger of the snapping turtle. However, assistance hadn't come yet. She'd been returning from performing Honor Guard duty at a ceremony for naturalization when she spied the turtle. Even if it meant getting soaked, she knew she had to help.

Carolyn, along with her husband, raced home to bring a few shovels to the scene. They scooped up the turtle and relocated it to a safer wooded area. The police officer graciously thanked the couple for their assistance.

Carolyn decided to share the story in order to honor the police officer for serving and protecting. What a sweet and compassionate gesture!

What about you? Do you think you would have stopped to help the officer?
