Motorcyclist Dandon Miller was enjoying a ride down a Pennsylvania highway on Memorial Day when he saw something that caught him a bit off guard. There was a bald eagle lying in the highway. It was obvious the bird had suffered serious injuries.

Dandon was not the only motorist who stopped when they saw the eagle but none of them knew just how to render aid to the bird.

Dandon said to The Dodo he stopped when he saw the crowd. Another onlooker used a stick to nudge the eagle. The bird spread its wings but could not fly. The motorcyclist says he dialed 911 and was instructed to call the Bird Research and Rescue center for the Tri-State area. Dandon followed instructions but learned it would take 45 minutes for rescuers to get to the bird.

He knew he could not leave the bird on the highway for that long but was a little fearful of grabbing him because of the long talons he saw. Thinking fast, he removed the flannel shirt he wore over his t-shirt and wrapped the eagle in it.

The eagle was surprisingly calm. It was obvious the bird knew Dandon meant it no harm. Dandon says he was careful to communicate calm to the bird and wanted the eagle to know it would not be dropped.

The flannel shirt was his favorite and it now has a few holes in it. But Dandon's concern was the health of the eagle. Rebecca Stansell arrived as promised, 45 minutes later. She thanked Dandon for protecting the bird before she transported the bald eagle to the Tri-State Bird and Research Facility.

The eagle needed surgery once at the Research Center but none of its injuries was life-threatening. The eagle is expected to make a full recovery.

The Research Center posted a Facebook update regarding the bird on May 29. The news was good. The bird's wings are healing well and it would not be long before the bald eagle would be one hundred percent again.

Dandon was worried for the eagle when he first saw the animal lying in the road. The news that a full recovery is expected makes this the best Memorial Day he has ever experienced.
