Mother Welcomes 14-Pound Baby After Going Through 17 Miscarriages

The birth of a baby is always an exciting time. This is especially true when your doctor says he is delivering the largest baby of his 27-year career. Cary and Tim Patonai knew their son Finnley would be large based on his brothers’ birth weights, but they didn’t realize just how big he really was. After his birth on October 4, 2021, the doctor and nurses wanted to have their picture taken with the adorable infant to remember the occasion.

Finnley’s size is even more impressive when considering the struggle Cary and Tim went through prior to his birth. Before the birth of their 2-year-old son Everett, the family experienced 17 miscarriages, and then another 2 prior to Cary’s pregnancy with Finnley. That makes 19 total since 2008. The family’s first child Devlen, 10, has been around for the heartbreaks as well. This is why the Patonais consider Finnley to be their miracle baby. 

Cary and Tim were prepared for a big baby because of their experiences with their first two children. When Devlen was born he was 8 pounds and 2 ounces, while his brother Everett was born 11 pounds and 11 ounces. Finnley was even larger, weighing in at 14 pounds, 1 ounce, and measuring 23.75 inches. Just two weeks after his birth, Finnley is wearing clothes sized for babies 6 to 9 months old.

The doctors told Cary that her baby could be 14-pounds during her last ultrasound, but they added that the estimates can sometimes be wrong. The medical staff also predicted if Finnley had arrived on his due date he would have weighed closer to 16.5 pounds. Keep reading to learn more about this family and their big, healthy baby.

In an interview with Today, the Patonais shared what they experienced during Finnley’s birth. “Finnley was a little celebrity at the hospital. Everyone wanted a selfie with him,” said Cary. “The OB/GYN who performed the C-section said that in 27 years he had never seen a newborn that size. There was so much excitement in the delivery."

The day brought on heavy emotions as well, due to Cary’s history of miscarriages. She shared, "Two of the miscarriages were sets of twins. It was traumatic for the whole family — especially our oldest child. Each loss would break his little heart."

Being pregnant with a 14-pound baby brought on its own set of difficulties. “I’m used to carrying big babies, but this was on another level. It got to the point where I could hardly move. It would take me 30 minutes to recover from taking a shower,” Cary explained. 

According to the American Pregnancy Association, most babies carried to full-term are born weighing between 6 and 9 pounds. It’s no wonder Cary was so uncomfortable at the end of her pregnancy.

The mother also shared that Finnley has been doing well, and eating a lot, since coming home from the hospital. “Typically, newborns are taking in about one to two ounces of milk,” Cary said. “Finnley is eating around four-and-a-half ounces.”

After so much loss, this family is just happy to have their healthy son in their arms, even if he is a little difficult to carry. “Our family is finally complete,” the boy’s mother said with a smile. “He’s absolutely perfect.”
