Mother Horse Gives Birth To Rare Twin Foals And Looks After Them Lovingly

People give birth to healthy twin babies on a fairly regular basis. Though some twins are born premature and struggle with various health issues, many of them go on to live happy, normal lives. The same is not always the case when it comes to horses. In fact, horses don't very often give birth to twins foals. When they do, the story often doesn't have a happy ending. Sometimes, the mare will not be able to provide both of the foals with the care they need to thrive and one of the foals will die. In other cases, both foals are too scrawny and neither one ends up surviving.

So imagine the surprise and delight of farmer Roy Frank when his mare, Sonitas Peponita, gave birth to not just one but two healthy foals! A mare bearing twins occurs so infrequently that the last time Frank was aware of such a birth was 25 years before the birth of these adorable twins. Though he knew the mare was pregnant, no one realized that she was going to have twins up until the time she gave birth.

Talk about an unexpected blessing! There's only a one out of 10,000 chance that when a mare gives birth she will have twins. Of those twin foal births, most develop serious physical problems, some of which are life-threatening. The mares often just can't keep up with the needs of two foals with health issues.

In Sonita Peponita's case, she seems to be taking her new responsibilities as a mother in stride. She's providing equal, nurturing care to each foal. Both of them are doing well. Frank was truly overjoyed when he saw that the new mom wasn't choosing just one foal as a favorite and ignoring the other, which is so often the case.

Though he often sells the Quarter Horses that are raised on his farm in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada. Roy plans to keep the two foals. His wife loves both of them. What an incredibly wonderful outcome of what started as a potentially tragic scenario!
