It's a sad thing when you have to think twice before letting a guest stay with you. This story is a note of caution.

Back in February 2019, a former neighbor contacted Wendi Bear, a resident of Irvine, California. This neighbor, Anne Marie, asked Wendi if it would be okay if she stayed with her for a few weeks. She was moving back to California from Florida and needed a temporary place to stay.

Anne Marie said she had few options and was desperate. Wendi said she could stay for one month, while she got back on her feet. They agreed that Anne Marie wouldn't need to pay rent while she was job hunting.

One month later. Anne Marie was still living in the apartment, sleeping on the couch, and display no signs that she was going anywhere soon.

It came to the point where Wendi and her daughter started to feel like prisoners. This went on for months, until Wendi confronted Anne Marie. She told Anne Marie to get out.

This is where Wendi got a lesson in how tenancy works. You would think Wendi could kick out a house guest at anytime. Anne Marie isn't on the lease, and she isn't paying rent.

Unfortunately, the law protects this type of unwanted house guest. What happens next is unexpected.
