There is nothing better than finally making it to a hard fought goal, except when you do it with someone you love. A mother and daughter duo worked together to lose weight after they both were feeling unhealthy and ready for a change. The pair decided to try the 100-day Give It 100 challenge, which asks participants to chronicle their progress as they work out and eat healthy for 100 days in a row.

Cheryl Shaw and her daughter Tessa were feeling unhappy with their appearances in 2015 and decided to do something about it. They tried the Give It 100 challenge and filmed themselves for around 10 seconds a day to keep up accountability and to have a record of their progress. When they began, Cheryl weighed 256 pounds and her daughter, who was 17 at the time, weighed 181.

With the right motivation, the mom and daughter began to see real results and at the end of their 100-day journey Cheryl lost 42 pounds and Tessa lost 32. The video they made showing their progress also went viral online and the team got to share their story with people from all around the world.

The story of this mother and daughter has inspired many others on their weight loss journeys. Health was a big factor in inspiring this family to lose weight. At the beginning of Cheryl and Tessa’s video, the mom shares: “My kids will worry about me because I’ve gotten so heavy. I’m a single mom and they depend on me—I’m all they have.”

Shedding pounds takes long-term dedication, and Cheryl definitely showed her family that she was serious about staying on track. “My mom just worked 12 hours in the ER, and we are still going to go for a run,” Tessa said in the video.

Everyone stumbles, so it is normal that the same should happen to this mother and daughter team as well. Cheryl explained to the camera, “So, my little cheat day has turned into two little cheat days, and that’s exactly what always happens—I gotta get back on track again.” She managed to pull it together and made a great change for herself and her kids.

The original idea to try and lose weight came from Tessa. “She came to me one day and she’s like, ‘Mom we’ve got to do something,’ and it just spiraled from there,” Cheryl said on “Good Morning America” in 2017. “We found this little website, Give It 100, and we’d go there every day and post a 10-second video. Every day we’d say, ‘What are we doing for fitness today?’ We came up with food, we came up with routines.”

Building the habit of posting short videos every day helped the mother and daughter to build healthy exercise and diet habits as well. They found a routine that works for them and were able to stay on it for over 100 days.

The mom and daughter kept working out together until Cheryl sustained a knee injury. However, the pair did see significant weight loss success. “I think I’m down 50 (pounds),” Cheryl said of her weight in 2017. “At one point I did get down to 150 and then I hurt my knee.” Tessa added, “I was highest (at) 185 and my lowest was 125.”

Cheryl chronicled her journey on her Facebook page and eventually, her and Tessa’s story was shared by actor George Takei. He has millions of followers, so overnight, the Shaws gained a ton of attention. Cheryl said of the experience, “I couldn’t believe it. All of a sudden I’m getting ‘boom, boom, boom,’ and I’m going, ‘What the heck is going on here?’ It was so funny.”

Of the two, Tessa is definitely stricter when it comes to dieting and cheat days. “It’s a lifetime deal and I’m not getting any younger,” said Cheryl. “She has become the mother of the duo. She’s like, ‘Mom, what are you doing now? What are you eating? C’mon Mom.’ And now I’m like sneaking food into my room, I’m hiding food—I’ve become the teenager.”

The teenager also had some good advice for anyone wanting to start losing weight. Tessa said: “Just get out there. Don’t get nervous when you go into the gym. I know that was my biggest setback. I used to walk into the gym and I’d get so nervous because people would look at you and you get self-conscious. I just did it, I did my own thing and I didn’t worry about anybody else. I said, ‘This is for me and I’ve got to love myself.’”
