Mother Can't Reach Baby And Dog Stuck In Burning House - Dog Sacrifices Himself To Save Her

According to WVBL-TV, Erika Poremski momentarily stepped outside the door to her home in Baltimore, Maryland and was alarmed when she noticed flames engulfing the house.

She was horrified, because her 8-month-old baby girl, Vivianna, was still inside, along with Polo, the family dog.

The frantic mother could hear her baby's cries but was unable to reach her. Neighbors also began to help, kicking doors and windows to try and get to the child in danger, but their efforts all seemed to be in vain.

Baltimore City Fire Department members rushed to the scene as quickly as they could. By this time, the fire had spread to both stories of the two-story home.

Erika alerted firefighters to her daughter and dog's plight. She and her neighbors waited anxiously as the firefighters entered the burning house in search of the trapped little girl and pet. Inside, they came upon an incredible yet heartbreaking sight that none of them would soon forget.

Vivianna's faithful dog, Polo, was found on top of the little girl. He was desperately attempting to shield her from the danger of the fire and smoke. Sadly, little 6-year-old Polo didn't survive. Loyal to the end, he gave his life to save the child he loved.

Erika choked up when she gave her account of the incident. She remarked that Polo was her "first baby," and that because of his sacrifice, Vivanna was only burned on her side rather than all throughout her body.

Medical professionals put the little girl into a medically induced coma in order to treat her burns without causing her extra pain. Ms. Poremski feels a mixture of gratitude and grief as she contemplates both the rescue of her daughter and the loss of her sweet pooch.

Vivianna is slowly healing after her frightful ordeal, though it will take her quite some time to fully recover. There's a GoFundMe page set up to help take care of her medical costs.

Anyone who wants to help out with her care as well as replacement of the family's home and household items is welcome to donate to the fund. Posted below is a video of the news coverage of Vivanna, Erika, and Polo's tragic fire.
