As Connecticut Children's Hospital's division chief of pediatric surgery, Dr. Christine Finck has dealt with many unique and moving cases. She's grown used to getting called to the hospital at all hours to deal with emergency situations.

One such case stood out from all the rest.

She received the call in the middle of a cold February night. When she arrived at the hospital, she discovered that a baby had been born prematurely. Worse, the baby had a condition called gastroschisis, in which the intestines are outside the body.

Despite her condition, the baby was feisty, according to Finck. The doctor was immediately taken with the little girl, whose name was Isabelle.

Baby Isabelle had a huge fight on her tiny hands. She underwent multiple surgeries over the first year of her life. Dr. Finck was by her side every day. She'd grown to love Isabelle, and Isabelle seemed just as attached.

Dr. Finck says that Isabelle's fighting spirit helped to forge the connection between them. Watching such a tiny, frail baby go through so much and still remain strong made Dr. Finck completely invested.

Near her first birthday, Isabelle was finally ready to go home. She wasn't out of the woods, though. The baby still needed a lot of specialized care in order to recover. She had to be fed through a feeding tube, and she needed an IV.

Isabelle's mother tried her hardest, but she was young and didn't have the support she needed. After two days of trying to care for Isabelle on her own, the woman visited Dr. Finck and confessed that she was in over her head.

Dr. Finck immediately offered to take Isabelle in. To her surprise, Isabelle's mother agreed. The woman wanted what was best for her child. She knew that Dr. Finck could provide the kind of care that Isabelle needed.

After some discussion, Dr. Finck and her husband agreed to adopt Isabelle. About two months later, they completed the process and Isabelle was theirs. One late-night call to the hospital changed so many lives forever.
