Cancer is one of the biggest challenges doctors are facing today. This evil disease invades our bodies and turns once healthy tissue into poison. Thankfully, medical research is a worthy opponent for cancer, ensuring that patients can fight back and conquer the disease.

In a story out of the United Kingdom, a mother and son recently won their fight with cancer after each fought the disease for close to four years.

In the fall of 2016, Vici Rigby was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer. As doctors explained the seriousness of Vici’s diagnosis, all that she could think about was her family and two children, George and Jack. Given her prognosis, at first, Vici didn’t think she had much hope of recovering. Four months later, Vici and her family were dealt another major blow. George, Vici’s four-year-old son, was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia.

Speaking with writers from Worcester Acute Hospitals, Vici told of how the news that her little boy had cancer felt like the rug had pulled from under her. Despite Vici’s shock, doctors reassured her that George’s cancer was only in its early stages and that he had a very good chance of beating the disease. Nevertheless, Vici and family earnestly prayed for two miracles so that she and George could come out of their treatments healthy and happy.

Looking back on those first days of George’s illnesses, Vici confided that while she and her husband Jamie were shell shocked, it seemed almost routine as by then cancer was part of their everyday life. After many years of treatment, including surgery and chemotherapy, Vici and George were recently given the all clear by their team of oncologists at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where they both received treatment. Vici was given the all clear first followed by George a few months later. In a now viral Twitter post, George rang the hospital bell, indicating that he is cancer free.

Vici and George’s positive prognosis comes at a time of other big changes for the Rigby family, as the writers from Worcester Acute Hospitals report. Last summer, the Rigbys moved from Bromsgrove, which is in the vicinity of Birmingham, to Tenby in Wales. Despite the move, Vici and Jamie were adamant that George continue his treatment at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. The couple were impressed by how attentive the hospital’s staff was to their family throughout the whole ordeal. To get George to treatments, the family had to drive a total of 350 miles, which is a 7-hour round trip.

Vici says that she cannot express in words just how amazing the doctors and nurses at Worcestershire Royal Hospital are, feeling that they are worthy of every accolade. Vici made sure to make special note of oncology nurse Dawn Forbes, calling her very attentive and caring. Nurse Forbes applauded the Rigby family for their resilience. “It’s been an absolute pleasure to care for George and his family over the last three and a half years. George has been very brave throughout his treatment. We are in awe of George’s parents, Vici and Jamie, who have also shown immense resilience throughout his treatment," she told the writers from Worcester Acute Hospitals.

In the end, Vici and George's recovery is proof of the miracles found in modern medicine. While disease might slow humanity down, it can never destroy the fortitude of dedicated doctors and nurses.
