Mother And Daughter Create History By Graduating From Medical School Together

It is right to say that an apple does not fall far from the tree. This statement was given life by a mother and daughter after they managed to get through medical school and graduate together. The two, Cynthia and Jasmine Kudji, however, attended different med schools.

Since she was young, Cynthia wanted to be a doctor, and her dream seemed to have gone down the drain after she got pregnant at 23 years old. After giving birth to Jasmine, Cynthia still kept in the medical field as she chose to work as a nurse. This decision was to help her stay on her dream path to becoming a doctor.

Born to a nurse who still had a passion for being a doctor, Jasmine grew to love the field of medicine. After more than ten years, the two already knew what they wanted to do: pursue medicine.

When she was old enough, Jasmine had made up her mind to study medicine, and her mother now had the perfect chance to follow her dream. Their dream of studying together was, however, impossible since they had to attend different medical schools. Jasmine attended LSU School of Medicine in Louisiana, while Cynthia studied at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts, finishing her degree at the Maine campus, reports UMHS.

Having lived together through Jasmine’s childhood, the pair were to be separated for the first time by such a large geographical distance. Talking to UMHS, Jasmine had this to say:

“I think initially it was difficult because my mom and I have always been really close so I had to get used to the distance, we had to learn how to FaceTime and Skype each other, so we were Skyping each other every day and whenever I had struggles, and she had struggles, we just had to learn to communicate from a distance, but I think over time we figured it out.”

The two were able to get through the hardships posed by the distance between them, and eventually, in April, they were both able to finish their studies.

Despite being in different schools, they both graduated at the same time, with Cynthia taking home an M.D. in Family Medicine and Jasmine an M.D. in General Surgery. The two needed each other through their education journey.

“I always tell people we laugh together, we study together, we cry together,” Jasmine said to UMHS. “I think medical school is one of those experiences that you don’t truly understand until you’re in it. Sometimes people struggle to find someone who relates to their struggles, so for that person to be my mom was extremely helpful."

Graduation was, however, not going to be the end of their story. There was a happy ending in their journey, as they found out that they would both be admitted into LSU Health to cover their residency! This good news reached them as the other graduates also learned where they would go for their residency and fellowship on Match Day.

This sweet story inducted the two into history books, as the pioneer mother and daughter to finish and graduate from medical school together and later do their residency in the same hospital. Reading about the duo sure sends a sense of inspiration to potential candidates.

The pair’s ability to achieve their dreams together reminds everyone that there is no limit to what anyone can achieve, regardless of their situation. All that is needed to achieve a dream is working hard, focusing on the dream, and words of encouragement from close loved ones.

If Jasmine and Cynthia were able to find inspiration in each other, there is no reason why anyone should give up when they have people to look up to. Also, it is important to hold onto dreams, even when they seem un-achievable.
