West Virginia couple Andrea and Mark Rivas longed to be parents but had difficulty becoming pregnant. After successfully conceiving through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), they were finally able to achieve their dream of having children in 2012. Through assistive reproductive technology, Andrea was able to give birth to six children in five years.
A Dream In Danger Of Dying
As is true for many young couples, Andrea and Mark Rivas wanted to start a family of their own. They tried hard to conceive. Sadly, two years of working hard to get pregnant only yielded depression and frustration.

Sweet Success
The brave couple didn’t let past failure stop them. Andrea signed up for IVF treatments and was thrilled to find she was pregnant, according to Today. The Rivas soon became the parents of fraternal twins, Conor and Avery.
Making Friends
During their infertility struggles, the Rivas became friends with another couple experiencing similar heartache. Sandi and Philip Palmisano also tried for years to become pregnant on their own before turning to IVF. Tragically, Today reports that IVF treatments did not give the Palmisano’s a long-awaited child.
One More Miracle
Andrea decided to reach out to the Palmisanos and offer to be a surrogate mother for them. “I just kind of blurted out, ‘I’ll carry for you! I can do it,’” Andrea told Today.
Philip and Sandi quickly agreed and participated in as many prenatal appointments as possible. They were overjoyed to see twins on the ultrasound and to welcome them into the world as new parents.
After helping the Palmisanos become parents, Andrea felt a familiar wave of sickness one day. When she had a positive pregnancy test, she was amazed to find she had become pregnant without the aid of IVF. She and Mark gladly welcomed two more babies into their family.
