A Ugandan woman is gaining worldwide attention because of her large family. Mariam Nabatanzi is a mother to 38 surviving children, and has given birth to a total of 44.

According to The Sun, Ugandans traditionally have large families, with an average of around five children per family. However, even in Uganda, Mariam stands out. There are several factors that have contributed to the astounding size of Mariam's family.

One factor is that she started her family at a very young age. Mariam was married when she was only 12-years-old and gave birth for the first time at 13 years of age to twins.

Now 40-years-old, Mariam has given birth 15 times. However, she has always given birth to more than one child. Six of her pregnancies resulted in the birth of twins, four times she had triplets, and she has given birth to quadruplets five times.

Doctors say that Mariam's ovaries are larger than normal which has likely contributed to her numerous multiple births. Due to her prolific fertility and the tremendous size of her family, Mariam has had a procedure that will prevent her from conceiving more children. Sadly, her husband has left the family, creating a serious financial hardship.

Mariam's oldest child is now 23 and has left school to help his mom support his siblings. Mariam does whatever she can to generate income for her family including working as a hairdresser and selling a variety of items including herbal remedies, scrap metal, and even home-brewed gin.

The family lives in four adjacent and extremely modest houses, with older children helping to care for the younger ones. In spite of their humble living arrangements, many of Mariam's children have graduated from school and are thriving against all odds.
