Mom Urges Parents To 'Start Loudly Looking’ For Their Kids If They Lose Them In Public

It’s no secret children can be a handful, particularly when they’re still at a young age. Even in the safety of your own home, there’s simply no excuse not to ensure you always know what your children are up to for their own safety. This awareness has to be more than doubled when taking them out in public. There’s simply no telling what kids can get up to or even what dangers they might face. For this reason, parents have to remain eagle-eyed at all times.

However, even at the best of times, it’s hard to keep track of rambunctious children. They simply have a knack for being curious about anything and everything. Therefore, it's good to have some tips in hand should you ever find yourself in the unenviable position of having lost track of your kids in a public place and need to find them as soon as humanly possible.

One mom is advocating for the "loudly looking” approach and is encouraging parents not to feel shy or embarrassed about it when in public. She said the method could lead some parents or guardians to feel self-conscious and awkward but that it was always “better to look stupid than to be sorry.”

The mom, Jess Martini, highlighted her tips in a video that has since gone viral, likely due to the number of people who are responsible for children who absolutely agree with her in this respect.

“I know for a fact that this advice has saved kids and I think that every parent should hear it,” she said in a TikTok video that garnered more than 628,000 likes since it was posted in September 2021.

Martini, who is the mother of three boys, explained what every parent should do should they face the horrifying nightmare of losing their children in public. She said the most important thing was to be loud when looking for your kids.

“Our first instinct is to shout our child's name. But if you're in public, that's not helpful,” she said, adding instead, you should begin shouting a description of your child, such as hair color, age and even clothes.

“Our instinct is to start quietly looking for our kid but we want as many people to start looking for that kid because best case scenario, somebody sees your kid and can alert you and knows to bring that child back to you. Worst case scenario, somebody is walking away with your kid and they’re much more likely to let them go because they don’t want that kind of commotion around,” she explained.

She added it’s also helpful to take a photo of your child before you leave the house as well.

Other tips she shared were teaching your child to stay in one place if they got lost, putting your own name and phone number on articles of their clothing, which should also be in bright – and matching, if you have more than one child – colors, and informing personnel, especially security personnel, at the area about your missing child. She added that if you are in a group that includes another adult, make sure to send one adult to the exit to ensure the child does not leave the area.

She added should your child go missing at home, the first places you should look is anywhere that might pose a danger to your child. “If your child were there, you'd be glad you checked those first,” she explained.
