Brandon Elder had a tough start in life. When he was just a newborn his 15-year-old mother traded him for a car, but his new family was not able to care for him. He was soon adopted by Patricia Elder, who sacrificed everything to make sure she could support sweet baby Brandon.

Years later, Brandon sang his heart out for his adoptive mother Patricia during this unforgettable American Idol audition. Tears in his eyes, Brandon performed an original piece called “Gone” that he wrote for his late mother.

Brandon’s mom Patricia worked multiple jobs at a time as a single mother to make sure her son could play sports and stay involved at school. When Brandon turned 14, Patricia was diagnosed with cancer, but fought it off after extensive treatment.

Her cancer returned two years later and doctors didn’t know what to do. That’s when Brandon turned to music.

His mom bought him a guitar for Christmas and Brandon explained that he used to play songs for Patricia. He wasn’t very good at the time, but she enjoyed listening to him anyway. His mom passed away in April 2016.

The American Idol judges were very moved by Brandon’s story and asked if this had made him a stronger person.

“Yeah. Stronger, I guess. Humble. Blessed to be here,” said Brandon.

Brandon then performed his original song called “Gone” and there was not a single dry eye in the room. You can watch his beautiful performance below and find out if Brandon advanced to Hollywood:

Coping with the loss of a loved one, especially if they impacted your life so deeply like Patricia did for her son, can be difficult, so it’s beautiful to see Brandon using music to preserve her memory.
