Mom Thinks Dog Is Pregnant With 7 Puppies Only To Find The X-Rays Miscalculated Her Litter

Animal rescuer Ashlee Holland has always had a fondness for animals. She often acted as a foster parent for pets reaching the end of their stay at a local kill shelter. Obviously, she was even more concerned than usual when she learned of a pregnant dog placed on the euthanasia list. As a mother herself, Holland could not imagine allowing the unborn puppies and the beautiful golden chow mix to lose their lives.

Holland had no doubts about her choice to take on the responsibility of caring for a full family of fur babies. She believes that no dog deserves to be put to sleep for space. She wasted no time with her decision and in making the dog comfortable in her new surroundings.

Ava, the doggy mom-to-be was obviously very pregnant once she reached her new home. The x-rays performed on the dog but were unable to determine exactly how many pups the bulging canine could expect. The estimated number was seven puppies, but Ava was about to surprise everyone.

Less than two weeks after the adoption, the big day arrived. In a few minutes short of an hour the productive pooch gave birth to the first five of her brood. Over the next ninety minutes, Ava delivered two more healthy puppies, bringing the total up to seven. The birth process began at 10:02 PM, so by this time Holland was ready for some rest for herself. Thinking the process was complete she cleaned off Ava and went to bed.

Holland awoke to a big surprise the next morning when she went in to check on the new mom and her babies. The number of puppies surrounding Ava had more than doubled overnight. The total? Miss Ava, the dog that had been homeless and destined for euthanasia just two weeks earlier, gave birth to an astounding 18 puppies.

Holland’s son made sure each puppy was given a name that now decorates their temporary collars. Some people may have been dismayed at the sight of so many dogs, but Ashlee Holland called the result “Heaven”. For this animal lover, she feels nothing but relief and happiness at the realization that she saved 19 lives.
