For most, the news that a baby is on its way brings joy and excitement. Nothing is more life-changing and profound than welcoming a child into the world. But for some, that joy is quickly turned into fear and anxiety when things don’t go the way they expected. This was the case for Samantha Duran, who found out her son would be born with spina bifida, a birth defect that can have debilitating symptoms.

When that 20-week ultrasound rolls around, almost every couple gets to decide if they want to learn the sex of their child. At the same time, the OB-GYN will look for any abnormalities or issues with the baby’s development.

When Samantha’s son, Maddox, was still in utero, she found out that he had spina bifida. This is a condition that affects both the spine and spinal cord which also affects other parts of the body like the brain.

Spina bifida is a condition that is sometimes preventable by taking enough folic acid during pregnancy, but even that doesn’t ensure that it will be avoided. Each case of this condition is unique, and some people who are inflicted with it live well into adulthood. But it’s not usually an easy road. Little Maddox is only 2 years old and has already made it through 16 different surgeries.

Doctors recently found a cyst on Maddox’s spine, leaving them to question how much time he might have left. That unknown is what prompted Samantha to begin building a collection of memories with her precious boy, just in case their time together would be shorter than she expected.

In a beautiful moment between mother and son, Samantha got them both all dressed up and embraced Maddox, dancing sweetly and slowly with him around the room to a song from “Coco”. She wanted to have their official wedding dance, just in case he doesn’t make it to that special day.

You can see Samantha nestling her face against Maddox’s little head and breathing in his scent. As soon as she turns to look the other way, you can see that she is becoming overwhelmed with emotion as the weight of the moment hits her.

As difficult as the situation is, the beautiful part is that Samantha is cherishing what is most important right now: spending every second soaking up the love of her child and building precious memories.
