What started out as a casual family outing in a restaurant quickly turned into a terrible experience after a mom and her autistic son were mistreated and shown the door. In a now-viral video, the scene of the woman being denied service and then getting kicked out of the restaurant was captured on video.
The woman, identified only as Heather, had decided to dine at Houston’s in Hackensack with her 2-year-old son, Hopper.
She recalled that the eatery’s management was “fully aware” that she would have a child with her in addition to her friend. However, when she requested a high chair for her toddler, she was told the restaurant did not provide them for patrons, which she said was not mentioned to her when she made the reservation. She said she explained the circumstances to the staff before requesting to speak to a manager, but they said no.
“I said, ‘Can I bring his stroller over? He needs to be strapped in. He has a disability and like, he can’t really sit in a restaurant unless he is strapped in,’” she explained before being met with a refusal.
Despite this, they then proceeded to place their order, and the food was brought to them quickly. With the order came the manager. That is when the situation escalated.
Recalling the incident to Fox 5 New York, Heather said:
“I was completely baffled, I mean like, I cannot believe this is happening and I was in complete shock.”

In the video posted by Heather to Tiktok, which had garnered upwards of 19.6 million views, she explained that the manager approached their table and abruptly declared:
“We’re actually going to cut this short tonight. Sorry, but we won’t be serving you tonight.”
They were then told to leave the restaurant. Heather recalled being unable to hold in an emotional outburst before their exit. Recounting her feelings at that moment to Fox 5 New York, she said:
“It was just extremely hard to see that happening to my son and like, he was recently diagnosed so I haven’t really even fully processed it yet. So, it’s kind of my first time to like, advocate for him.”
Meanwhile, it is learned the restaurant chain states on its website that its establishments “are generally not the best place for young children” and that it does not make provisions for child seating.
Many viewers shared their thoughts on the altercation, with some not entirely satisfied with Heather’s recording.
“The outburst at the end tells me a lot more happened that wasn’t filmed and there is more to this story,” one person commented.
Another chimed in with a similar view, writing:
“The waiters first words ‘In that case, folks…’ so clearly you said or did something.”
Many who were familiar with the restaurant and some who had even previously worked there also shared their views on the matter.
“I worked at a Hillstone restaurant for years. We didn’t have high chairs, boosters, kids menus because frankly we weren’t a kid friendly establishment. Especially at night when it was busy,” one wrote.
Another person also commented that they had worked there before, and this was to be expected from the restaurant.
When asked whether she knew about their policies on children beforehand, Heather said she did not, or else she would not have gone there otherwise.
