Mom Shouts For Joy After Seeing Military Son For The First Time In 2 Years

Working in the military can be very difficult as you can be assigned to a different country or to a far-flung area with no network signal, making it much more challenging to keep in touch with loved ones. So it is understandable when family members turn emotional when they reunite with men or women in uniform, even if they were only gone for a short amount of time.

Army Specialist Ethan Houston from Tallahassee had been stationed in Germany for two years. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had been difficult for him to come home and visit his mom, Lana Hill.

When he finally had the chance to go back to the US and see his family, he did so without any reservations. He came home on July 4, 2021, making it one of the most memorable Independence Day celebrations for both of them.

He surprised his mom at a grocery store. His mom couldn’t believe it and screamed at the top of her lungs after seeing his son in the flesh.

In an interview with WALB News, Houston’s mom admitted her eyes couldn’t believe it when she saw her son.

“I was just in disbelief. I couldn’t believe because I just had no idea,” his mom told WALB News.

Hill then recalled the moment she saw her son, saying: “And I think I screamed, of course out of pure joy, but it was like, ‘is Ethan here in the flesh? Am I really actually about to touch, feel, see, hug and kiss?’”

But even though Hill’s scream seemed like it was the first time Houston had heard it, the latter said he knew it was coming even before he went there. “To be honest, I almost expected it,” Houston said.

He then recalled one of the few instances when his mom screamed the same way, even though he was only gone for two months.

“When I graduated basic training, I was only gone for two months, and she screamed the same way when she saw me then. It’s been two years, so I know it’s coming,” he said.

Houston went on to explain why he decided to take a video of the surprise he did for his mom.

“I used to watch videos of soldiers coming home, you know, and so I said I want to do that for my mom,” Houston remarked. “It’s not every day you get to surprise your parent,” he added.

Hill, who wanted to make the most of her son’s brief stay, made sure to make him feel as special as possible. She also honored her son for all he does for his country.

“I just want him to feel happy at home because in the next couple of weeks, he’ll be gone back doing what it is he does for our country you know,” Hill said.

For Houston, coming home was his way of forgetting about work and just being with his family, even just for a short time.

“I can come home, I can decompress, I cannot think about work for a while and you know just hang out with my family man. Can’t beat it,” Houston said.

People who have seen the touching video were moved by the emotional encounter between Houston and Hill. “Thank you my young King for your service. I know she's a proud mother. Blessings to the family,” one user wrote. “The screams of a mother in a moment like this is the sound of heaven,” another user wrote.
