Mom Shares ‘Gender Disappointment’ And Says It’s ‘Heartbreaking’ To Not Have Daughter In Family Of 6

Becoming a parent is an exciting moment for moms and dads. It’s the start of something new and the beginning of a wonderful journey. While raising kids can come with its ups and downs, many parents will say that there is no better joy in life than caring for their children.
Some people have dreams of being parents of a son or a daughter or a parent of a multi-children family. Others don’t care what their child’s sex or gender is so long as they are happy and healthy.
One mom named Erica Jane went online to share her disappointment in finding out that she would be welcoming her fourth son. While many people would find joy in welcoming yet another child, this mom expressed how sad she was that she would never have a daughter that would get to experience all of the same things that she did.
Erica posted a video on TikTok in March 2022 expressing how heartbroken she was that she would never be able to call herself a mother of a daughter. In the post’s caption, Erica wrote, “All the experiences I will miss out on #genderdisappointment.”
The mom started off, “You know, a lot of people just don’t really understand gender disappointment.”
She explained how, looking ahead into the future, she saw a lot of missed opportunities since she wouldn’t be having a daughter.
Erica continued: “I’m always going to be the mother-in-law. I don’t get to go dress shopping … I don’t get to witness my child have a baby of their own that come out of them being a woman, going through pregnancy, all that stuff.”
While Erica recognized that she “could have a great daughter-in-law,” the idea of not having a daughter of her own was “heartbreaking.”
Some parents understood where Erica was coming from. One person commented, “The best way I can describe the feeling is I was not disappointed I was having a boy, I was grieving the little girl that I’ll never have.”
However, many people responded to the video with criticism. One person said, “You’re right, I do not understand lol.” Another added, “That poor boy.” A third person pointed out that it shouldn’t have mattered whether Erica was having a son or daughter, and said, “None of this is promised, regardless of gender.”
Another person pointed out that Erica could change how her kids’ future partners see her if she finds a way to change her outlook on the situation, explaining, “Our generation has a lot of toxic mothers-in-law and we view that as the norm. Be good to your son’s future partners and they will be good to you.”
Even though Erica received plenty of backlash for sharing her thoughts, she didn’t regret it. Speaking about why she documented her gender disappointment, Erica told The Mirror, “I wanted to let others know it's okay to be disappointed, it's normal.”
Although the mom has received some backlash from people about her gender disappointment, she has continued to regularly post online, sharing heartwarming videos and photographs of her adorable family on Instagram. At one point, the mom blurred out her children’s faces, but she opted to show them fully again, but “just not as much as before,” as she explained in a post.
Erica has also shown her happiness toward being a mom of four boys, as she wrote in her Instagram bio: “living in paradise☀️.”
