Losing a loved one is never easy. As people work through the grieving process, it’s common to reflect on all of the amazing times they were able to share together. This could mean watching silly home movies, looking through endless photographs, or keeping hold of their prized possessions.
Triston Walsh of Millstadt, Illinois, was only 4 years old when his father, Marine Sgt. Nick Walsh, died at age 26 on deployment in Iraq. He left many things behind, including his beloved 1990 Ford Bronco. In an attempt to surprise Triston, his mother told the teenager that she sold the car, only to gift it to him in 2019 after secretly having it restored.
Triston’s 16th birthday was approaching, so Julie, Nick’s wife, decided to take the opportunity to turn the restoration of her late husband’s car into an unforgettable gift.
Julie knew that the car wouldn’t last forever. Since the car sat unused, its parts were left to fall victim to rust and decay. Worried about the car’s deteriorating condition, Julie sought out help in getting it fixed with the help of the staff at Mertz Ford. She was fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of some very kind people who donated different parts and supplies to make the vehicle good as new.
Julie had kept the car as her son grew. Since Triston didn’t have much of his dad left, he was eager to one day get his license so he could connect with one of the last tangible pieces of his late father. The following turn of events was not what Triston was expecting and left him incredibly emotional.

However, Triston and his brother Tanner were furious when they noticed the vehicle was gone. Julie told the Associated Press: “(Triston) said, ‘Where’s my dad’s truck?’ And I was like, ‘Well, kiddo, I had someone come out and look at it, and it’s going to cost way too much to fix it, so I sold it, and I’m going to use the money to buy you a better car.’”
This didn’t bode well with Triston, and he gave his mother the silent treatment for a couple of weeks. However, Julie didn’t let the silent treatment ruin the surprise. She knew that Triston’s heartache would only lead to greater joy when he finally received the greatest gift he could ever ask for. When she took Triston to the local dealership, more than 100 people showed up to cheer the teenager on and present the shiny red Ford Bronco, including a military color guard, according to the Associated Press.
“It just means so much to me,” Triston told the outlet. “I’m just really happy that I’m able to have a piece of my dad left with me.”
After the emotional surprise, Triston and his family continued to celebrate his birthday at the dealership with patriotic desserts and decorations, along with Nick’s official military portrait.
“It was overwhelmingly sweet,” Julie’s cousin, Karrie Vanhosser, said. “The look on his face was priceless. It makes me sad that his dad wasn’t here to see it.”
Mertz Ford Client and Community Relationships Manager Amy Kern was also moved by Julie’s gift to Triston. “This was a way of showing (Triston) that the community cares, that the country cares,” she said.
