Mom Of 3 Shares Touching Letter She Wrote To Doctor After Dismissing His Advice To Terminate Her Pregnancy

When Courtney Baker got pregnant with her third child, she looked forward to a healthy delivery like her first two. However, during a routine check, the doctor diagnosed her baby with Down syndrome. He then suggested an abortion, stating that her family would have a tough time tending to a baby with Down syndrome. Baker refused.

Baker shared a post of her daughter on Nov. 25, 2022, where Emersyn wore a T-shirt and black leggings with the words, “I’m writing my own story …”. In the clip, Emmy put a letter in a mailbox and walked back barefoot with a smile.

“Emmy is mailing local doctors letters on how to deliver a Down syndrome diagnosis,” Baker captioned the post. “The truth about Down syndrome is that people with Ds will always Rise Up above and beyond expectations. Joy, love, kindness, hugs, and the very Best quality of life. She Is worthy. And so are her peers.”

Baker believes those words as she also puts up a fight for other children with the condition worldwide. On Aug. 17, 2023, she expressed her angst on Instagram at the countries aiming at wiping out Down syndrome.

“60 Minutes Australia ran a story the other night on whether or not children 'like mine' are worthy of life. Iceland boasts of being 100% Down syndrome free. Denmark brags that within 5 years from now, it will have eradicated Down syndrome,” she revealed

Baker shared that she was angry because these countries wouldn’t have given Emmy a chance. They would also have to contend with misinformation and bullying.

“It’s time to call it like it is,” Baker wrote. “Australia, Denmark, Iceland, Europe. America. Down syndrome can’t be eradicated unless the human life who has Down syndrome is exterminated … And that’s nothing to be proud of.”

Baker wrote a letter to her prenatal specialist and posted it on Facebook

“This took so long to write because I understand how important it is. I wanted it to be perfect. Just like Emmy,” she started. “A friend recently told me of when her prenatal specialist would see her child during her sonograms. He would check over her baby and comment, 'He’s perfect.'

"Once her son was born with Down syndrome, she visited that same doctor. He looked at her little boy and said, 'I told you. He’s perfect,' Baker continued.

The mom of three shared she was sad because her doctor advised her to abort Emmy when she had no clue what to do instead of supporting her even after hearing her name.

“You asked us again if we understood how low our quality of life would be with a child with Down syndrome,” she wrote. This made her dread subsequent appointments.

“My child was perfect,” she gushed and added that she was not angry, just sad because “the tiny beating hearts you see every day don’t fill you with a perpetual awe.”

“And I’m heartbroken that you might have said that to a mommy even today. But I’m mostly sad that you’ll never have the privilege of knowing my daughter. Emersyn,” she explained.

Baker told the doctor that her daughter improved her life and that of thousands of others. “She’s given us bigger smiles, more laughter, and sweeter kisses than we’ve ever known,” she wrote.

“So my prayer is that no other mommy will ever have to go through what I did,” Baker said and wished that the next time the doctor saw a fetus with Down syndrome, he would tell the mom “the truth... ‘Your child is absolutely perfect.’”
