London native Irina Cretu was informed by doctors early in her pregnancy that her baby would likely suffer from serious health issues. In fact, it was the suggestion of her doctors to terminate the pregnancy.

Irina wanted a baby very badly. She was also bolstered by the fact doctors could not identify a specific health issue her baby would face. Irina decided to keep her baby. She felt that she and the new baby could fight through whatever complications that may arise.

Irina thought the wrinkled skin her son Albert possessed at birth was a little odd. She says the skin was especially wrinkled in the stomach area. She recalls thinking that her son looked like an old man.

Albert was quickly rushed to intensive care. He would remain there for a month. Four days after giving birth to Albert, Irina learned the extent of her son's health problems.

The diagnosis for the infant was prune belly disease. This condition is one that is extremely rare and means Albert was born without muscles in the abdomen. The rare syndrome also causes other serious complications.

In addition to possessing no abdominal muscles, Albert suffers from kidney disease and problems with his gastrointestinal tract. Irina says the worst part of Albert's illness is the unpredictability. She says one day he can be perfectly fine and grow gravely ill the very next day.

Irina searched desperately for a solution to Albert's problem only to discover the surgery he needed was only performed in the United States. The surgery involves taking a portion of the muscle in the thigh area and placing it in the abdomen. The surgery is effective at solving the problems with digestion and greatly improving respiratory function. Irina hopes other problems her son experiences will also be eradicated.

Irina is now determined to raise the money her son needs for the life-changing surgical procedure.
