Auditioning for a televised talent show can be extremely nerve-wracking and stressful. For most people, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. 34-year-old full-time-mother Claire Connolly did the unthinkable when she shocked the audience with her revelation not more than five minutes into her “Britain’s Got Talent” audition.

Some parents are willing to do anything to make sure their child follows their dream. Many sacrifice money, time, and even their jobs to see their kid make it, even if it means giving up on their own dreams. In the case of Connolly, she had to give up her audition spot to make her daughter’s dream come true.

‘She thinks it’s me who’s auditioning,” a nervous Connolly said while shaking as a leaf in front of the judges. “She’s got me through some very hard times in my life, and I feel like I owe her, so I’m giving my audition up for my daughter.”

Before appearing onstage, Connolly was seen being accompanied by her 15-year-old daughter Tia. Timidly, she was hanging out with Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly at the side of the stage.

As soon as she heard her mom’s bombshell of a revelation, Tia was absolutely shocked and in disbelief.

“This is my way of saying she’s fabulous because she deserves it, and she’s an incredible person,” Connolly continued as Tia told the hosts backstage that she did not know what was going on.

When Tia came out, shy and surprised, she was even complete loss for words when Alesha Dixon asked her how she was feeling. Getting a sense that the young girl was really surprised by what happened, she suggested that she should compose herself backstage so that she would be ready to face them later for the actual performance, to which she agreed.

DixonSimon CowellAmanda Holden, and Bruno Tonioli, the judges for the Season 16 of “Britain’s Got Talent,” were surprised too, with the latter wondering if this had ever happened before – which Cowell said that it had not.

When Tia finally came out for her time to perform, she received resounding applause from an excited crowd. Asked by Holden about when she started singing, Tia confessed that she started singing as young as four years old, and only her shower has heard her singing most of the time.

As soon as Whitney Houston’s “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” played in the background, the timid Tia transformed into a powerful, confident, and impressive vocalist. Belting out the notes effortlessly, Tia seemed to mirror the essence of the very song she was singing.

At the end of her performance, the whole venue erupted into cheer and bolted to give her a standing ovation, including the four judges behind the bench.

Both Connolly and Tia were teary-eyed after the performance. When asked why she chose the ballad to audition, Tia’s explanation was a heartwarming one.

“A lot of people picked on me a lot and that’s song helped me and also my mum is the strongest person I’ve ever met, so I want to dedicate it to her as well.”

All the judges were in unison on how Tia “smashed” her performance, with Cowell saying he “loved” auditions like these. He also made it apparent that if it weren’t for Connolly’s surprise decision to give up her audition, Tia wouldn’t actually do it and shoot her shot. It seems like her mother gave her the perfect nudge to discover her own strength.

Eventually, Tia got all four yes from the judges and moved forward to the next round.
