Mom Finally Receives Child Support Owed By Her 'Deadbeat Ex' Husband – Fifty Years Later

Toni Anderson, a woman living in California, filed paperwork in hopes of receiving back child support. The filing comes 50 years after her ex-husband stopped providing support for their daughter who was a toddler at the time. The amount of back child support Toni sought was more than $150,000. She finally received the payment in March 2019.

Toni says after she divorced him in the 70s, her husband moved to Canada and refused to pay child support to her. She said she declined to pursue the matter at the time and worked to care for her daughter alone. She recalls she was able to send her to college after high school.

Toni is now 75 years old and lives in San Diego. She says she worked as an interior decorator to support herself and her child. Anderson is retired now and says she was stricken with a sudden and unexpected thought one night.

She began to search through old paperwork regarding her child support case. Her ex-husband was ordered by the court to pay her $160 a month. Toni's ex returned to the States years later but did not pay the back child support he owed her. It turns out there is no statute of limitations in California for child support.

The back payment and accrued interest resulted in her ex being ordered to pay Toni's daughter $170,000. It is not that uncommon for adult children to collect on child support they should have received as children. Some courts will garnish the wages of parents who have ignored their responsibilities once they are located.

Toni's daughter is now 53 years old and will benefit greatly from the settlement her mother was able to obtain for her. Toni says it is her wish that other single mothers view her story as an example of what is possible.

"I think he's a little bit panicked." She told ABC13, "And I'm very happy because I was panicked all these years. Now it's his turn."
