Mom Delivers Quintuplets, 4 Of Whom Are Identical Girls

Haylee and Shawn Ladner embarked on the intrauterine insemination (IUI) process in 2022 after failing to fall pregnant through natural means, but little did they know just how successful it would be.

On Feb. 16, 2023, the couple welcomed quintuplets, comprising daughters Adalyn, Everleigh, Malley, Magnolia and son Jake. Even more surprising was the fact that all their daughters were also identical quadruplets.

Haylee’s babies, who were delivered at the Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, have been described by medical professionals as an extremely rare occurrence, with only one previous such case having been recorded.

“She had a quintuplet pregnancy with four identical females,” associate professor of maternal fetal medicine Dr. Rachael Morris said in a statement. “Reports of spontaneous quintuplets vary but are about 1 in 60 million. There are very few reports of identical quadruplets in the literature to date. Reported incidence is 1 in 10 to 15 million pregnancies. There is only one other report of this combination in the literature from 2018.”

The healthy babies were delivered via Caesarean section and weighed between 1 pound, 11 ounces, and 2 pounds, 5 ounces. A team of 30 neonatal specialists as well as experts such as obstetricians and gynecologists, were deployed to ensure Haylee’s pregnancy and delivery went smoothly.

Meanwhile, Morris had only words of praise for the formidable Haylee and said:

“She is the strongest mother I’ve ever met. From our first meeting, it was clear how committed and determined Haylee and Shawn were. Haylee demonstrated such strength and determination throughout her hospital stay, despite the tremendous challenges of carrying a quintuplet pregnancy.”

Haylee and Shawn had suffered through two miscarriages before turning to IUI. The fertility treatment procedure involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. After starting the process in 2022 and discovering they would become parents to five children, they were flabbergasted.

“We were both really nervous leaving the first ultrasound. I think I handled it a little bit better than he did,” Haylee said in a video detailing their journey before Shawn added, “She most definitely did because I was a nervous wreck.”

Haylee also said in the Good Things with Rebecca Turner podcast last year they wanted to “share this story for two reasons: one, because we believe they are miracles given to us by God, and two, we wanted to do it to hopefully help other couples who have gone through infertility, too, know that they have some hope out there in the world as well,” she said.

Since giving birth, Haylee has been ecstatic about starting a new chapter in her life as a mother.

“I didn’t think I would ever get the chance to be a mother of even one baby, so now that I am going to be a mother to five, it is the greatest blessing of my entire life,” Haylee told a news conference, according to Today.

She added she couldn’t wait to finally bring all her babies home and start their lives together.

“They’re thriving, and we’re looking forward to the day when they can come home. They are the greatest blessing of my entire life,” she said.
